In short

WhatsApp's minimum age in the UK is 13. It was lowered from 16 in April 2024. Messaging services like WhatsApp aren't included in the UK's planned under-16 social media ban, so for many children it will stay the main app they use with friends. If your child is on it, the settings to check together are who can see their profile photo, last seen and online status, and who can add them to groups.

Key facts

  • WhatsApp's minimum age in the UK is 13 (since April 2024).
  • It isn't included in the UK's under-16 social media ban.
  • Check who can add them to groups, and who can see their profile photo and last seen.

What is WhatsApp's minimum age in the UK?

13. WhatsApp lowered its minimum age in the UK and the EU from 16 to 13, and the change took effect in April 2024. It was criticised by children's campaigners at the time.

Is WhatsApp part of the under-16 ban?

No. The government's fact sheet says the planned ban, expected from spring 2027, covers social media such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X, and that messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal won't be included. For many children, WhatsApp will stay the main place they talk to friends. Read more about the UK's under-16 social media ban.

Is 13 old enough?

That depends on your child, but it helps to know where the problems usually come from. For most children it isn't strangers so much as group chats:

  • Groups can be large, and they can include people your child doesn't know.
  • They don't stop at bedtime. A busy group can buzz well past midnight.
  • Unkindness in a group is public, and it's hard to step away from.

The settings to check together

Sit down with your child and go through WhatsApp's privacy settings:

  1. Groups: set who can add them to groups to their contacts, not everyone.
  2. Profile photo, About and Last seen: limit these to their contacts, or nobody. By default, anyone on WhatsApp can see a user's profile photo and when they were last on.
  3. Blocking and reporting: show them how to block and report someone, before they need to.

Family rules that help

  • Phones sleep outside the bedroom. It's the simplest answer to late-night group chats. See screens before bed.
  • If something upsetting arrives, show a grown-up, and don't forward it on.
  • It's fine to mute a group, or to leave one.

Questions parents ask

What is the age limit for WhatsApp in the UK?
13. WhatsApp lowered its minimum age in the UK and the EU from 16 to 13 in April 2024.
Is WhatsApp included in the UK's social media ban?
No. The government has said messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal won't be included in the under-16 ban, which covers platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X.
Can my 11-year-old have WhatsApp?
WhatsApp's own terms set 13 as the minimum, so an 11-year-old shouldn't have their own account. If staying in touch with family is the need, texts on a basic phone, or a family group run from a parent's phone, do the job.
How do I stop strangers adding my child to groups?
In WhatsApp's privacy settings, set who can add them to groups to their contacts only, rather than everyone. While you're there, limit who can see their profile photo and last seen to their contacts.
