Kairoo on iPhone

There are two apps. Which phone gets which?

There is a three-minute walkthrough of every tap, on both phones. In short: Kairoo Parents goes on your phone. Kairoo goes on your child’s. You write the deal together, both sign it, and Kairoo holds it on their phone. Your app is where you see the day, add extra time, pause screens, and answer the asks that need you.

How do the two phones connect?

Your app shows a six-letter code. Your child types it into Kairoo on their phone. One use, fifteen minutes, and nothing is emailed. It works whether their phone is an iPhone or an Android.

Kairoo on their phone asked to allow Screen Time. What is that?

It is Apple’s permission for one app to count time in other apps and to rest them when the deal says so. Kairoo uses it for exactly that and nothing else. If you tap Don’t Allow, the deal can’t finish — the “apps that count” picker only works once Screen Time is on. Tap Allow screen time again on the setup screen, or turn it on in Settings › Screen Time.

If your child is under 13, installing may ask for your Apple ID. Sign in only under Settings › their name › Media & Purchases, install, then switch it back. Leave iCloud signed in as them — Screen Time follows the iCloud account, and swapping that one leaves Kairoo in a mode they can turn off themselves.

What travels between the phones, and what never does?

What reaches your phone: the deal, daily and category minute totals, stops, asks, decisions, your replies, and — only if your child chooses to take one — a photo showing a first-thing is done. What never does: messages, screenshots, browsing or watch history, location. App names never pass through Kairoo; Apple’s Screen Time hands it sealed handles, so our servers only ever hold minutes. (If your child is in your Apple Family Sharing group, Apple itself can show you their apps on your own phone; that stays between you and Apple.) Everything Kairoo keeps about your child, they can see on their own phone. The full account is in the privacy notice.

I got a new phone. How do I get my family back?

On your app: Family › Save your family to an email. A six-digit code, no password. Do that once on the old phone, and on the new phone the same email brings everything back — the deal, the history, the child’s phone still paired. If your child’s phone is the one being replaced: Family › Replace or re-link their phone on yours, then a fresh six-letter code on theirs.

How do I delete everything?

From your app, there and then. On iPhone: Family › Settings & more › Delete this family and all its data. On Android: Family › Account and privacy › Delete account and family data. It removes the family record and any email link. Your child’s iPhone lifts its limits by itself; on an Android child’s phone, uninstall Kairoo as well. Or email hello@kairoo.family from the address you signed up with, and it is done within 48 hours. What we delete, and the little we keep: kairoo.family/delete.

Screen Time got switched off on my child’s phone. Now what?

You both find out: your app says so on Home, and Kairoo on their phone shows it too, without a telling-off. Open Kairoo on their phone and tap Allow screen time. Until then the deal is visible but nothing is being held.

I’ve forgotten the parent PIN.

On your app it can be reset with Face ID (Family › Settings & more › Parent PIN). The grown-up PIN on your child’s phone is separate; if that one is lost, Replace or re-link their phone starts it fresh.

Kairoo on Android

The same two apps, the same six-letter code. On Android the child’s phone can share its list of installed apps (names only) so you can choose which count from your phone, and individual apps can be capped. Screen Time on iPhone doesn’t allow that, which is why the iPhone setup happens on the child’s phone instead.
