Is Roblox safe for kids? What changed in 2026

Roblox changed more in 2026 than in any year before. Here's what's different, age by age, and what no setting will do for you.

In short

It's safer than it was, but it isn't hands-off. Since January 2026, Roblox has required an age check to use chat. Since 16 June 2026, under-16s have been placed in age-based accounts: Roblox Kids for 5 to 8-year-olds, with chat off by default, and Roblox Select for 9 to 15-year-olds, where chat opens up gradually. Parents can set screen time and spending limits until 13 and manage chat until 16. Roblox isn't covered by the UK's planned social media ban.

Key facts

  • January 2026: an age check is needed to use chat.
  • 16 June 2026: Roblox Kids (5 to 8, chat off by default) and Roblox Select (9 to 15).
  • Parents can set screen time and spending limits until 13, and manage chat until 16.

What changed in 2026

Two big changes, six months apart:

  • January: age checks for chat. Anyone who wants to chat on Roblox now has to confirm their age, using facial age estimation or ID. Chat is then limited to people in a similar age group.
  • 16 June: age-based accounts for under-16s, rolled out worldwide. Content, chat and parental controls now follow your child's age.

What it means at each age

  • 5 to 8: Roblox Kids. Chat is off by default. A parent can turn on text chat, only with children in the same or a similar age group. Games have to pass extra review to appear.
  • 9 to 15: Roblox Select. Chat opens up gradually, and parents keep oversight until 16.
  • 16 and over: standard Roblox. Chat is on. Parents of 16 and 17-year-olds can still be notified about spending and see screen time and friend lists.

Accounts move up automatically: Roblox Kids becomes Roblox Select at 9, and Select becomes standard at 16.

The parental controls worth switching on

From a parent account linked to your child's, Roblox lets you:

  • set daily screen time limits and spending limits (until 13)
  • manage their friends list and approve Trusted Friends (until 13)
  • adjust chat settings and allow or block specific games (until 16)

What's still on you

No setting on Roblox does these things:

  • Time across everything. Roblox's limit covers Roblox. It doesn't know about YouTube, TikTok or the other games on the same phone.
  • The stop. Roblox games rarely have a natural end, which is why "one more round" is so common.
  • The conversation. Ask who they play with, what they build and what they'd do if someone made them uncomfortable. Children who've talked about it beforehand are more likely to tell you.

Is Roblox covered by the UK ban?

No. The UK's planned under-16 ban is aimed at social media. The government's fact sheet says children will still be able to use gaming platforms, but high-risk features such as livestreaming and contact with strangers will be restricted for under-16s. Roblox time, agreed together.

Kairoo counts games like Roblox in the time you and your child signed up to, gives a heads-up so they can finish the round, and answers "one more game?" from your deal.

Two apps, no adverts. iPhone now, Android soon.

Questions parents ask

What age is Roblox suitable for?
Roblox now has accounts from age 5, with different rules at each age. Roblox Kids (5 to 8) has chat off by default and only games that have had extra review. Roblox Select (9 to 15) opens chat up gradually. Standard accounts start at 16.
Can strangers talk to my child on Roblox?
Less easily than before. Chat needs an age check, and Roblox limits it to people in the same or a similar age group. Kids accounts have chat off unless a parent turns it on. It's still worth checking who your child plays with in the parental controls.
Will Roblox be banned for under-16s in the UK?
No. The UK's planned ban covers social media such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat. Gaming platforms aren't banned, but the government says high-risk features such as livestreaming and contact with strangers will be restricted for under-16s on gaming and other online services.
Can I limit how long my child plays Roblox?
Yes. Roblox's parental controls include screen time limits until your child is 13. They only cover Roblox, though, so an agreement about screen time as a whole still matters.
